What Is Spot Trading? How It Works, Examples & Risks

Unlike margin or futures, you use your own funds with no loan, so your loss is limited to your capital. On Mobee, you trade spot through the Spot Trade feature.

It is also written as "trading spot", and it means the same thing. This page explains the concept, from how it works to a worked example. To start practicing right away, read the beginner's guide to buying crypto or see the list of Mobee trading pairs.

Key Points

  • Spot trading is buying or selling an asset directly at the current market price, with immediate delivery of the asset.

  • Price is set by market supply and demand in real time.

  • You use your own funds with no leverage, so your loss is limited to the capital you put in.

  • Main advantages: simple, transparent pricing, and liquid for popular assets.

  • Main risks: market volatility and trading fees. Prices can still fall.

  • Common strategies: day trading, swing trading, arbitrage, DCA, and scalping.

  • On Mobee, you can trade spot through the Spot Trade feature.

What Is Spot Trading?

Spot trading is the activity of buying or selling an asset at the current market price, with the asset delivered right away. In crypto, a trade usually completes within seconds after the order is executed.

The word "spot" refers to the price right now (the spot price). In spot trading, you buy the asset itself, not a contract on its price.

This is different from futures trading, which uses contracts with an expiry date.

The spot concept also exists in stock, commodity, and forex markets. This article focuses on crypto.

Spot Trading vs Margin Trading: What Is the Difference?

Spot trading uses your own funds. Margin trading borrows funds with leverage to enlarge a position. This table compares the general concepts.

AspectSpot TradingMargin Trading
CapitalYour own fundsYour own funds plus a loan
LeverageNoneYes
Risk of lossLimited to the capital you useHigher, including the risk of a forced liquidation
Asset ownershipYou buy the asset itselfThe position is opened with borrowed funds, and the rules differ by platform
CostsTrading feeTrading fee plus borrowing cost
ComplexitySimplerMore complex, you need to monitor margin

Spot is easier to control, but it is not risk free. Asset prices can still fall.

How Spot Trading Works

Spot trading runs in a few steps:

  1. Supply and demand: The price of an asset is set by buyers and sellers in the market. When demand is high, the price tends to rise. When supply is excessive, the price tends to fall.

  2. Order matching: The platform matches buy orders with sell orders. You can use a market order for fast execution at the market price, or a limit order to set your own price. Learn the difference in the guide to order types on Mobee.

  3. Direct transaction: Once an order is matched, the asset changes hands and payment is made right away.

  4. Trading platform: You use a platform such as the Spot Trade feature on Mobee to see real-time prices and place orders.

  5. Settlement: In crypto, settlement is usually instant. In traditional markets such as stocks, settlement can take one to several business days, depending on the market.

Spot Trading Example

This example is fictional and only shows how to calculate, not a price prediction. Say you buy 5 coins of "Asset X" at Rp1,000,000 per coin, with an illustrative fee of 0.1 percent per transaction. This fee is not a Mobee rate. Check the official rates on Mobee Trading Fees & Rules.

StepPrice goes upPrice goes down
Buy 5 coins @ Rp1,000,000Rp5,000,000Rp5,000,000
Buy fee 0.1 percentRp5,000Rp5,000
Sell price per coinRp1,100,000Rp900,000
Sale proceedsRp5,500,000Rp4,500,000
Sell fee 0.1 percentRp5,500Rp4,500
Net result+Rp489,500 (about +9.78 percent)-Rp509,500 (about -10.18 percent)

Three things you can see from this example:

  • A 10 percent price rise produces a net profit below 10 percent, because the fee is deducted twice.

  • A 10 percent price drop produces a loss above 10 percent, because the fee is still paid.

  • Without leverage, your maximum loss is limited to the capital you use. However, the price can fall deeper than in the example, and holding an asset does not guarantee the price will recover.

Benefits of Spot Trading

Spot trading has several advantages that make it popular:

1. Direct and Fast Transactions

You own the asset as soon as your order is filled, with no long settlement wait.

2. High Liquidity

Popular assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum usually have large trading volume, so you can buy or sell quickly without moving the price much. Quieter assets can be less liquid.

3. Price Transparency

Prices form openly in the market. You can see real-time prices and make decisions based on data.

4. Simple and Easy to Understand

Unlike derivatives, spot trading does not involve futures contracts or margin. This makes it easier for beginners to learn.

5. You Buy the Asset Itself

In spot trading, you buy the asset itself, not just a bet on the price direction. The asset you buy is recorded in your account on the platform.

6. Access to Many Assets

You can choose from many assets based on your interests and goals. See the list of Mobee trading pairs for the assets available.

7. Opportunities from Price Movements

Moving prices create opportunities for price differences if your analysis is right. However, the same movement can also cause losses.

Risks of Spot Trading

Spot trading is simpler, but it is still risky. Understand the following before you start:

1. Market Volatility

Crypto prices can change drastically in a short time. Without good risk management, you can suffer large losses. Also read 8 risk management mistakes beginners often make.

2. No Leverage

Spot trading generally does not offer leverage, so the price difference you can capture is smaller than in margin trading. In exchange, risk is easier to control.

3. Trading Costs

Every transaction carries a fee or spread. Understand the fee structure of the platform you use. For Mobee, check Trading Fees & Rules.

Spot Trading Strategies

Traders use several strategies to fit their style and available time:

1. Day Trading

Opening and closing positions within a single day to take advantage of short-term price swings. This strategy needs close monitoring. Learn more in the day trading crypto guide.

2. Swing Trading

Holding an asset for several days to weeks to capture larger price moves. It suits you if you cannot watch the screen all the time.

3. Arbitrage

Taking advantage of price differences for the same asset in different places. The gap is usually small and disappears fast, so trading costs and speed matter a lot.

4. Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)

Buying a fixed amount at set intervals to reduce the impact of volatility. Suited to the long term. Read the dollar cost averaging guide.

5. Scalping

Taking small gains from very short price moves. It needs fast execution and low costs. Learn more in the crypto scalping guide.

6. Spot Grid

Spot Grid automates buy and sell orders. How to use it on Mobee is in the Spot Grid tutorial.

No strategy guarantees results. Pick the one that fits your time and risk tolerance.

Conclusion

Spot trading is a simple and transparent way to buy and sell crypto with your own funds. You buy the asset directly, without a loan, so your loss is limited to the capital you use.

Even so, prices can still fall and fees still reduce your result. Understand how it works, calculate the costs, set a loss limit, and start with a small amount.
