MSFT Stock After Earnings: Azure Up 48%, Shares Fall. Potention?

Microsoft reported fiscal Q1 2027 results (July to September 2026) on October 28, 2026 after the market closed. Revenue reached US$92.3 billion, up 19%, and Azure grew 48%. MSFT shares briefly rose about 4% in after-hours trading, according to CNBC and SiliconANGLE.

That gain did not hold: in the regular session on October 29, MSFT closed at US$530.14, down 0.16%, and on October 30 it closed at US$521.91, down 1.55%. In other words, strong results were not enough to lift the stock amid pressure on AI shares.

What Happened in the Financial Results?

The figures below come from Microsoft's official press release for the quarter ended September 30, 2026.

MetricQ1 FY27Year-over-year growth
RevenueUS$92.3 billion+19%
Operating incomeUS$45.9 billion+21%
Net income (GAAP)US$36.6 billion+32%
Net income (non-GAAP)US$36.4 billion+18%
EPS GAAPUS$4.92+32%
EPS non-GAAPUS$4.89+18%
Microsoft CloudUS$63.9 billion+30%
AzureUS$33.2 billion*+48%
Commercial RPOUS$677 billion+73%

Commercial RPO (remaining performance obligation) is the value of signed commercial contracts not yet recognized as revenue. Non-GAAP EPS of US$4.89 was above the analyst consensus of US$4.73, according to SiliconANGLE. The Agents and Infra segment grew 25% to US$76.8 billion, while Devices and Consumer fell 3% to US$15.5 billion.

*According to SiliconANGLE, this is the first time Microsoft has disclosed Azure revenue in dollars. The dollar figure also appears in the press release's detail tables (US$33,165 million).

Why Did MSFT Stock Reverse?

After the report, shares rose about 4% in after-hours trading. In the regular session on October 29, MSFT opened at US$540.22, traded between US$519.56 and US$541.29, and closed at US$530.14, slightly below the October 28 close of US$531.01. Volume was 39.3 million shares, about 81% above the 30-day average, and market capitalization was about US$3.94 trillion (Gotrade summary).

The Gotrade summary says none of the reports it reviewed named a Microsoft-specific reason for the small decline. The explanation is more sector-wide:

  • Pressure on AI stocks. On October 29, the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.38%, Alphabet fell about 12.6%, Amazon fell about 4.3%, and Meta rose about 2%. SiliconANGLE reported Alphabet's free cash flow was negative by about US$9 billion.
  • Cash flow was the differentiator. According to Yahoo sources cited by Gotrade, investors sensitive to negative free cash flow at Big Tech punished Alphabet harder, while Microsoft kept positive cash flow.
  • Capex did not surprise to the upside. Capital spending including finance leases of US$45.2 billion came in below the consensus estimated at up to US$50.7 billion (SiliconANGLE).

The reversal shows investors weigh quarterly results together with market context, not revenue alone.

Why Do These Results Matter for Microsoft?

Cloud and AI demand is still strong. Azure grew 48% on a much larger base than a year ago, and commercial RPO rose 73%. The RPO increase shows customers have locked in long-term commitments, which gives visibility into future revenue. CFO Amy Hood said demand still exceeds supply (SiliconANGLE). The customers behind RPO need to be checked in the 10-Q.

Capital spending is rising sharply. In the cash flow statement, "additions to property and equipment" was US$39.4 billion, versus US$19.4 billion a year ago, up about 103%. SiliconANGLE uses US$45.2 billion because it includes finance leases, with growth of about 30%. Both figures are correct under their own definitions, so compare using one method. SiliconANGLE also noted that about 75% of capex now goes to short-lived assets such as GPUs and CPUs, up from 66%.

Cash flow is strong, but free cash flow fell. Operating cash flow of US$58.0 billion rose about 29% from US$45.1 billion. Because capex surged, free cash flow (operating cash flow minus additions to property and equipment) was about US$18.6 billion, down about 27% from about US$25.7 billion a year ago. This is our calculation from the official cash flow statement. Hood said free cash flow will stay positive throughout FY27 (SiliconANGLE).

The OpenAI effect on earnings. GAAP net income this quarter includes a net gain of US$207 million from the OpenAI investment, versus a net loss of about US$3.1 billion a year ago. That roughly US$3.3 billion swing helped drive the 32% rise in GAAP net income. That is why the non-GAAP figures, which exclude the OpenAI effect (net income up 18% and EPS up 18%), better reflect operating performance.

Q2 FY27 guidance. According to SiliconANGLE quoting Hood, Q2 revenue is expected at US$96 billion to US$97.1 billion and Azure growth at 49% to 50% in constant currency, above analyst expectations (about US$95.6 billion and 45.1%). The Azure guidance was also reported by Investing.com. The revenue guidance is so far confirmed only by SiliconANGLE, so check the earnings call transcript.

What Does It Mean for MSFT Stock?

The quarter beat consensus, but the price action shows good news can be absorbed quickly. The stock fell 1.55% on October 30, and the next move will depend on whether Azure growth and RPO conversion keep pace with capital spending.

Factors investors can watch:

  • Potential catalysts: Azure growth staying above 45%, evidence that RPO contracts are turning into revenue, and Microsoft 365 Copilot user growth (CEO Satya Nadella said it rose 50% from the prior quarter, and Hood said Microsoft 365 E7 has reached millions of seats, according to SiliconANGLE).
  • Risks: capex doubling pressuring free cash flow, a weakening Devices and Consumer segment, and market sensitivity to interest rates and the financing of AI spending.

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell any stock. For the company's business profile, read Microsoft stock on Mobee Academy. After-hours trading happens outside the regular session, and US market hours in Indonesian time (WIB) helps explain when market reactions occur.

What Investors Should Watch

  1. The 10-Q. Check capex details, finance leases, and the makeup of commercial RPO, including how concentrated it is among large customers.
  2. Earnings call guidance. Confirm revenue guidance of US$96 billion to US$97.1 billion and Azure at 49% to 50%, plus the capex direction for the rest of fiscal 2027.
  3. Free cash flow. See whether the 27% decline is temporary as capacity is built, or continues.
  4. Peer AI spending. The reaction to Alphabet and Amazon on October 29 shows the market is sensitive to Big Tech capex and free cash flow.
  5. The Anthropic link. Anthropic publicly filed its S-1 on October 26. According to a summary of the S-1, Anthropic's minimum compute commitment with Microsoft is US$44.9 billion (November 2026 to May 2033). Anthropic's IPO roadshow can start November 10 at the earliest. Read our separate analysis of the Anthropic IPO.

Conclusion

Microsoft opened fiscal 2027 with results above consensus: revenue of US$92.3 billion, Azure growth of 48%, and commercial RPO of US$677 billion. Shares briefly rose about 4% after-hours, but the gain vanished in the regular session. MSFT closed at US$530.14 on October 29 and US$521.91 on October 30.

On the other side, capital spending up about 103% pushed free cash flow down about 27%. As long as Azure and RPO growth can absorb that spending, the narrative stays constructive. If not, pressure on cash flow could become the next focus. Investors should read the 10-Q and the earnings call transcript before drawing conclusions.
